ebay scam animated gif

I see this has been posted by auctionbytes, and most certainly worth paying careful attention to.

I won’t go into all the gory details here. I’m not advertising. Basically a couple more sites have been found peddling ebay /paypal accounts, and more. If you want to see the names of the sites this time etc , go read auctionbytes.

One site “claims to have a technical team that specializes in programming, coding, scripting that knows how to give you a fully working eBay account to get you back on track selling your merchandise.” and invest(s) a lot of time and money into Research & Development. We keep ourselves up to date and we maintain the highest quality services,”

They are having a big sale! Price reduced from $375 to $299.

Sadly, it’s not the first time, nor the only sites where this type of thing has been discovered.

This is telling in a few different ways.

It reminds s us, that no matter what, ebay and paypal cannot be trusted. You don’t know who you are dealing with, and neither do they!

(Don’t forget either the Paypal User Agreement, in section 1.3: Identity Authentication states “…PayPal cannot and does not guarantee any user’s identity.”)

It’s not bad enough that anyone can sign up as many accounts, using fake names and credentials as they please per ebay rules, but you can buy established accounts, both ebay and paypal. Indeed, entire fake personas with which to conduct supposedly legitimate business?  Do you buy that?

Is there some incongruity to that logic?

Now why would anyone need that?

On top of that, even paypal employees recognize and admit that the majority of their users are signing up with fake info. I pointed that out not long ago on the overlooked CAPP forum:

“As a customer service rep for PayPal, I understand the frustration. I also understand online buying/selling online is a risk. Unfortunately the statistics show that 74% of all people prefer to use a alias name online to hide their identity.

I spend the majority of my shifts talking with frustrated buyers, and sellers, who are opening accounts with fictitous names and addresses.

We do not have a face to face business, and all is fine until a customer has a issue. When compiling customer information, we find out that they used bogus info. We usually flip the coin on a dispute towards the person who has a good history, and who has not given made up info.

paypal customer service w employee commentIf you open a PP account using false info, and file a dispute, unfortunately we cannot just say o well you lied to us, and now we trust everything you tell us regarding your transaction…” (continues)

screencapture of the entire statement at a complaints forum, CustomerServiceScoreboard.com/paypal

But wait, there’s more! You see, even though ebay spokesperson provided a response to auctionbytes:

“We do not support activity that goes against our stated policies, which are in place to help maintain a safe buying and selling environment on eBay.” However, it appears eBay is unable to prevent people from creating accounts for the sole purpose of reselling them.”

That is simply not true!

First, let’s not overlook the obvious! ebay and paypal could do what it takes to register and verify new members at the gate! They could also limit the number of accounts each person or household signs up/is allowed to have. Not doing so works to ebay and paypal’s advantage, at the cost of your safety!

Second, we’ve all seen the extreme censorship which ebay imposes not only on their own site but  clear across the interwebs; the Orwellian lengths that ebay will go to in order to silence critics and bury bad news. Not to mention some of the REALLY sleazy things which surround any ebay criticism. If they wanted those sites down, they would be down.

But again, in ebay’s very own terms or rules we find this, in the main User Agreement, under ‘Using ebay’:

“While using eBay sites, services and tools, you will not:
…transfer your eBay account (including feedback) and User ID to another party without our consent;

So there you have it. They must have ebay’s consent. Obviously this is ebay’s own way of welcoming scammers, people whom have previously been banned for whatever reason, people whom need to use fake ID’s for whatever reasons…

ebaY will quietly let them in the back door, and claim ignorance. The fact remains, ebay and paypal get a cut of every scam! It is in their interest to allow this sort of thing, much like all the counterfeiting etc. Simple as that.

I guess it’s true. Donahoe loves all his children. Even the illegitimate ones.

For anyone who missed out, I recently posted a video demonstrating how ebay has been the world capital of uncorrected critical safety flaws, ID theft and lies for the last 11 years.

Since the days of Meg Whitman, ebay has been nothing but one scandal and cover-up after another.

Everything on ebay which can be faked, gamed, cheated, exploited etc is being faked, gamed, cheated, exploited etcfrom the looks of things. ID’s, merchandise, everything!

Can you feel the trust?

Looks like Commiebay may have tried their hand at censorship again! As we all know, the trojan.bayrob first reared it’s ugly head around last February or March, around the same time the ongoing massive worldwide hijackings and hack attacks also started and when many of us first became familiar with the name Vladuz. Now it appears to have evolved/been updated by the crafty hackers, and has claimed recent victims to the tune of thousands of dollars.

Note that the identical listing has been used time & again! ebay does not even have the common sense or abilty to keep the same scam out once reported!

Idiots!

The trojan is reported to change host file, redirect users to fake ebay and automotive fact check, & escrow related pages. The trojan is also reported to be able to infect your machine simply by viewing the fake listings on the site.

At present, the malware is not detectable until after you have been scammed according to reports

As usual, ebay disavows any responsibility. Reason enough to avoid the site completely.

Again, ebay could defeat this threat in one fell swoop, simply by disallowing active scripting in the user-supplied content of the auction listings, and by using a text only, sans-link email format.

I would not be surprised to learn they get a cut of each & every scam, beacuse if they did not or if it was costing them, they would fix the problem. Follow the money.

Okay, moving on now, I was getting ready to post this the other day on November 14, having spotted an educational video on youtube, uploaded by youtube member “SymcSecurityResponse”

However, when I went back to the video just a short time later, I could have sworn I saw the words “no longer available due to a third party copyright claim” or words to that effect.

About a day later I went back to that url to find that now it is “This is a private video. If you have been sent this video, please make sure you accept the sender’s friend request.”

I do find another video, similar in content tio the previous vid by the same youtuber, but this version has all the ebay logos blacked out.

So my guess is that the long, slimey, scaly tentacle of a dangerous & sleazy online auction giant reached out and tried to intimidate a large, well known and respected security firm, and that that security firm was forced to black out those logos, & remove or otherwise make unavailable the original version, and the important consumer awareness info it contained.

Please be aware there have been a number of curious disappearances of proof of ebay & Paypal fraud & hacking related videos, articles, etc. Time & time again!

Not to mention the threats & intimidation some have faced when they posted such info..

Make no mistake: The bayrob.trojan targets ebay only! This threat is NOT found on any other online auction site, nor have there been any reports found alleging this to be on any other online venue anywhere to the best of my knowledge, to date.

Do you trust any outfit that would rather try to hide the facts instead of cleaning up IT’s own act ?

Also consider this. We have all read the reports and the threat. Ebay is not covering the THOUSANDS of dollars lost by these innocent & trusting consumers who got shafted then disrespected, despite the much vaunted claims of “Protection up to $20,000

Keep in mind, ebay probably makes those thousand$ in a matter of milliseconds. The execs have all been very busy cashing in MILLION$ in stock options. You think they could spare about an hour’s worth of interest to pay those poor victims back? (I think it would be funny, fitting & proper if someone TOOK their money back, using any methods they needed to. No holds barred.)

I guess sleazebay was too busy paying to have Santa Claus kidnapped & tortured to notice those folks, eh?

What part of those 5 core community values does all that reflect?

My guess is that must be the “We encourage you to treat others the way you want to be treated”

Can you feel the love?

Anyway, here is the censored version of the video. I will add one thing: To avoid being taken by this and many , many other scams, simply avoid ebay. Pretty obvious, eh?

The Trojan.Bayrob Scam

Here is the Symantec Blog article associated with that video, complete with extensive screenshots. (the ebay logos are blacked out there too.)

But we find this portion, wherein not a single other online auction site is mentioned:

or keep reading if you want to learn a few things.  You will.

Update May 2010:

If you are reading this you probably got here by searching something like “has ebay ever been hacked?” or ebay database hacked maybe.

The answer is a resounding YES!

All the proof you need is on my youtube channel and my other blog. Of particular importance is this post with video and screencapture.

Don’t overlook the main page and archive right here either for continuing and recent examples. The hack attacks and uncorrected critical safety flaws have now been ongoing for 3 or more years.

As for Paypal having been hacked to the gills and how they handled things, read these carefully:

Netcraft: PayPal Security Flaw allows Identity Theft

Responsible Disclosure? – Paypal vulnerable for two years

Those are just a couple examples. Click the main page ,search or usetopic tags for plenty more.

end update

Before we start, there is another HUGE problem with ebay, lists of persons account info being compromised, and hijacked accounts, taking place on the ebay Germany boards, but MANY of the accounts are from the USA.

Be sure to read this, and warn your friends, family, neighbors and co-workers… EbaY has MAJOR security issues.

It is a very dangerous site these days.

“The List — ebay has been hacked in a major way” back from the Memory Hole

Above a slideshow, below the entire text.

This is what ebay does not want consumers to know about.

The information which would have protected ebay’s users.

Does this sort of action (censorship and the further concealment/destruction of info) seem dishonest to anyone other than me?

First, related news articles and forum threads.
Vendor Security Lapse Has eBay Sellers Fuming

Vendor Security Lapse Has eBay Sellers Fuming

Vladuz, Ebay, and the 1200 Compromised IDs

Is Vladuz the Good Guy?

Once again, it sure seems as though there were a whole bunch more articles than this, but along the way, stop and watch the videos. I have made more videos about the dark dealings, and so have others, about ebay and paypal both.

Note some of the responses given though. Who are the people with the naysaying denial?

Why is there a core group of “ebay can do no wrong” presence, constantly on those forums over there?

How many other folks have you ever heard about ready to freely, out of pure sense of chivalry, defend large, international multi-billion dollar corporations free of charge, strictly volunteering, as a pastime, day in, day out, mondays, holidays, rainy days, on vacationtime, weekends, all day, all night, all afternoon, for year after year after year…?

Do they work for LiveWorld, ebay’s named forum moderation provider?

Recently, the FTC moved to unmask Word-of-mouth Advertising.

Should shills on message boards, and other, similar Fake Persuaders be dispensing non-factual, dishonest, and biased for profit, information which has great potential to harm to consumers, and indeed has caused untold problems, if not abject hardship, for the victims of this incident.

Well hind sight tells us much, eh?

Now, the text from my saved file.

Edit; The reasons for which this is an issue are;

1) This posting was pulled from the forum quickly, yet I for one see no outright posting violations, does anyone?

2) This posting also quickly “evaporated” from Google very soon after as well. Somehow I luckily stumbled upon this.

3) We see now, that information was dispensed which was known to be false at the time. I firmly feel that ebay would have swept the entire incident under the rug, had they their way. Does this seem like a deliberate attempt to conceal, cover-up, make unavailable information which shows them in a very bad light. (IMO)

4) By deliberately depriving IT’s users, and the general www public at large of THE TRUTH and further It’s clear and continued pattern of untruthfullness, censorship, and concealment, and of course, blatant DENIAL, ebay has put a great many at risk of ID Theft, theft by fraud, etc, the list goes on… and very possibly YEARS of painstaking effort to correct it, and any number of further related problems.

5) Do not let us overlook the fact that ebay has profited every inch of the way through this entire unprecedented wave of hacking, hijacking, account take -overs, phishing , pharming….

Is there a pattern emerging?

Do you trust an outfit like that?

The List — ebay has been hacked in a major way
xxxxxxxxxxxx (0 ) View Listings | Report Feb-14-07 16:14 PST
There should be some big announcements. When is ebay going to come clean about The List, (the 1200 page long list) and all the account hijackings going on?

That is a HUGE reason to boycott!

There is quite a discussion taking place about it right now on the T&S bd.

The auction site never would strike a match or put out a fire, so little problems grew into big ones..ya-ya-ya-ya-ya…♪♫♪♫ ♪♫♪♫

Have a nice day!:^O

Geez ive already been hacked once recently! What list are you talking about?

See T&S. There is apparently a large list of hacked ebay accounts with passwords listed.

Some posters say they tested the account access and were able to log in.

It wasn’t 1200 pages and it was NOT hacked accounts.

So, were they hacked or not?

This is an internet message board. Here’s how it works.
If someone says eBay was hacked, it isn’t up to them to prove eBay was hacked, it’s up to you to prove eBay wasn’t hacked.

It’s a beautiful system if you’re the type that likes to tell others about the sky falling.

I don’t think there’s a list.
I posted on the other thread, ebay is required by law to notify those individuals. Just like ChoicePoint & Ameritrade, even the local H&R block when they had a computer stolen… you don’t have to be hacked to be notified.

It is always prudent to change your passwords from time to time. It would be really prudent to do so now. It is against the rules as well to speak openly about threads that were pulled. Cryptically speaking, it would be wise to change your passwords.

Next,

“Is ebay like the Titanic”

Oh, but one question….to the “chicken_little_groupie” person…what say ye now?

I get the feeling that peoople reading this might also like to read “ Smart Americans ~ Consumer’s Personal Data Posted on ebaY T and S Board by Romanian Scammer”

This is where the very first reports of the “brinkleywillie” episodes were posted. I am the one who submitted the tip & screencaps to consumerist.com for the post:

Hacker taunts Americans for Letting Him Steal Their Identities

Here is a better screencapture of that carnage, the full thread from ebay’s Trust & Safety forum

That was when sleazebay apparently sent one or more of their paid netkook stalker-trolls to our CAPP forum to disrupt our forum,  and attempt to keep that story under wraps, by posting a bunch of filth, while posing as a different person, complete with that person’s photo as avatar (a practice known as ‘false personation’) and then actually tried to have our forum shut down for the very things they posted. (They posted LOTS of filthy things there, that thread is but a tiny sample, then had some little pep rallies to recruit people complain to the CAPP forum site owners. That very same netkook stalker(s) went on to harass (and indeed is still harrassing) CAPP members/ former CAPP members by publishing a LOT of very nasty and wholly false things about them all over the internet. There is no other plausible explanation. Anyone with a lot of time might want to look into that further, there is a really sleazy, yellow, filthy underbelly of the ebay community most folks are not aware of. Not my focus here nor there, just an entertaining little side note.
